  1. 1469-1527. Italian politician and author,
  2. whose name is now synonymous with cunning and
  3. cynical statecraft. In his most celebrated
  4. political writings, Il principe/The Prince
  5. 1513 and Discorsi/Discourses 1531, he
  6. discusses ways in which rulers can advance
  7. the interests of their states (and
  8. themselves) through an often amoral and
  9. opportunistic manipulation of other people.
  10. Machiavelli was born in Florence and was
  11. second chancellor to the republic 1498-1512.
  12. On the accession to power of the Medici 1512,
  13. he was arrested and imprisoned on a charge of
  14. conspiracy, but in 1513 was released to exile
  15. in the country. The Prince, based on his
  16. observations of Cesare Borgia, is a guide for
  17. the future prince of a unified Italian state.
  18. In L'Arte della guerra/The Art of War 1520 he
  19. outlined the provision of an army for the
  20. prince, and in Historie fiorentine/History of
  21. Florence he analysed the historical
  22. development of Florence until 1492. Among his
  23. later works are the comedies La
  24. Mandragola/The Mandrake 1524 and Clizia.
